Partly because of its simple good looks and partly because it was still being produced four years ago, it is difficult to imagine the Honda NSX was in fact unveiled 20 years ago.

But Honda’s supercar, which was tuned by none other than Ayrton Senna, was unveiled at the 1989 Chicago motor show in concept form before going into production the following year.

The car utilized Honda’s race car engineering and featured forward-thinking detailing such as a double-wishbone suspension cast from aluminium instead of the usual steel.

However, the most impressive part of the NSX’s engineering was the engine, a quad-cam, 3.0-litre, 24-valve transverse V6 with variable valve timing and induction producing 270bhp at 7100rpm and 210lb ft of torque.

It’s difficult to remember now but two decades ago it was almost expected that supercars would be difficult and cumbersome devices to drive, with patchy reliability and no day-to-day usability.

The NSX changed all that, with light controls, good visibility, and bulletproof mechanicals. It wasn’t long before other supercar manufacturers followed suit.
