Infiniti plans electric car

21 October 2009

Infiniti is developing a four-seat luxury electric car.

Carlos Ghosn, president of parent company Nissan, made the announcement at the Tokyo motor show today and said work had begun on a concept.

The car will be ‘high performance’ and could use the powertrain and platform of the forthcoming Nissan Leaf, thereby taking Infiniti into the premium segment occupied by the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

However, the electric Infiniti will offer more power than the 115bhp Nissan, although final output has yet to be determined.

'We have the know-how and we are ready,'
said Tatsuya Shiosaki, from Nissan's Product Strategy and Planning division, ‘we are testing, testing, testing, so the power hasn't been fixed yet, but based on the Leaf's power we can add more.'

Infiniti has already unveiled a hybrid M saloon and says with the electric car it will “offer an almost unrivalled choice of powertrains compared with other luxury brands”.

Expect the electric Infiniti to go on sale 2012.
