VW Golf is Europe's best seller

16 October 2009

Volkswagen’s new sixth-generation Golf has remained as Europe’s top selling vehicle in September.

The Golf sold 59,552 units, which was a 56 per cent increase on the amount sold last year. This is partly down to the success of pan-European scrappage schemes, as well as the introduction of a new model since this time last year.

The Ford Fiesta was Europe’s second best seller, shifting 51,291 units, with the Vauxhall/Opel Corsa third having sold 38,947 units.

The figures are from industry analysts JATO Dynamics, and it warns that the sharp rise in sales seen in the past few months are likely to be unsustainable when scrappage schemes are removed.

David Di Girolamo, head of JATO Consult, said: “We are still seeing the market recovery driven by small cars and new models – in other words, the popular choices in national scrappage schemes.

“This has clearly distorted the natural performance of some markets and models. Now the end is in sight for these incentives, we will be watching the market closely, to see if this recovery is sustainable.”
