SMMT expects sales to rise again

Britain’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said new car sales in Britain are likely to have risen again in September ahead of the official release of the figures tomorrow.
The SMMT said the figures were likely to show sales have risen for the third straight month due to the success of the scrappage incentive scheme and the launch of new 59 registrations.
Last week, business secretary Peter Mandelson said the scheme had been extended by a further £100 million, which will allow an extra 100,000 cars to be sold under the scheme.
In a statement, the SMMT said: “The recent extension to the scheme is an extremely important decision that will give more consumers access to it, and should help to counter the likely negative impacts of a return to the higher rate of VAT and the introduction of first year Vehicle Excise Duty rates.”
