These shots show a small Mitsubishi crossover testing in Switzerland. It will go head to head with the Nissan Qashqai.

The squinting headlights are similar to those on an Evo and the grille will be the trademark Mitsubishi 'jet fighter' design.

The car will effectively be the production version of the CX concept from the 2007 Frankfurt motor show.

The company is keen to get the car into production as soon as possible to cash in on the booming market for small SUVs, with a launch scheduled for next year.

The car will use the Lancer platform and come with petrol and diesel options, from 1.8 to 2.2 litres. An Evo-style SST dual-clutch ’box and four-wheel drive will also be available.

A hybrid version will not be available at launch but could be added to the range later.
