Range Rover LRX spied
21 September 2009
Range Rover is honing its new LRX compact SUV for class-leading roadholding, as these pictures of the car testing at the Nurburgring show.
Under the skin of the chopped Freelander mule is the car maker’s new premium compact SUV, which will take on accomplished rivals such as the Kuga, from old parent company Ford.

Excellent off-road ability is part of any Range Rover package, but the company is equally keen to give the LRX supreme on-road manners.
The LRX will be positioned as the new, more environmentally friendly face of Range Rover as part of the brand’s 40th anniversary.
It’s expected that the styling of the final version of the LRX will differ from the concept. The car could also have the option of a hybrid drivetrain, which may be standard on more expensive versions.
The LRX is based on the same basic transverse engine platform as the Freelander. The hybrid version of the LRX will probably use an electrically driven rear axle, which will work in combination with the engine-driven front wheels.
Premium small models are currently enjoying huge popularity, as buyers still want smaller cars that retain an upmarket feel. Production of the LRX is likely to start in early 2011.
