Worldwide sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid have now topped two million units since the first generation Prius went on sale in Japan in 1997.

Toyota claims that since 1997, its hybrid vehicles have led to approximately 11 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions being released into the atmosphere; the figure is based on the emissions of petrol-powered vehicles of similar size and performance.

The first Toyota hybrid to be sold in the UK was the Prius in 2000, and the Japanese firm has since sold 30,000 examples in the UK, including 3000 of the recently launched third-generation model.

The latest Toyota hybrid, the Auris, will be built in the UK from mid-2010 and Toyota wants a hybrid version of every model by 2020.
