Kia has shown off two new hybrid concept cars at the Frankfurt motor show.

The Kia Cee’d hybrid and Kia Sorento hybrid have been be displayed alongside their facelifted sister models. Kia has already launched its Forte LPI hybrid in its native Korea and that model will is also on display at Frankfurt.

The Cee’d uses a similar powertrain to the Forte, but its 1.6-litre engine runs on petrol instead.

The Sorento hybrid uses a new 1.6-litre diesel unit, which is fitted with twin turbochargers to help it produce 161bhp. The engine is mated to an electric motor and drives the front wheels via a new double-clutch transmission offering a choice of fully-automatic, or manual sequential gear changes. Kia wants to bring the double clutch gearbox to production next year.

This helps the Sorento achieve CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

Both cars have been developed at Kia’s European R&D centre and will undergo thousands of miles of testing across Europe.

According to a Kia statement they “will generate data for inclusion in the design process of Kia vehicles during the next decade”.
