Italian press says Ferrari ace is making a rapid recovery

Felipe Massa will race for Ferrari again at the Italian Grand Prix on 13 September, according to reports in the Italian media.

Massa suffered a serious head injury - including a fracture at the base of his skull - during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, and is currently recuperating at home in Brazil.

The reports of his return have not yet been confirmed, but team members have said that he is making remarkable progress. Should he return in Italy, it would be just seven weeks after his life-threatening accident.

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali visited the Brazilian last week.

"Felipe is in excellent form and his recovery is going very well!" said Domenicali. "I'm very happy about Felipe's state," he added. "The medical checks which have been carried out over the last two weeks continue to be very encouraging.

"Now it's important to be patient and take one step at a time, without any hurry."

F1's regulations would require Massa to undergo a full examination by the sport's official doctors before he could race again.

Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer will stand in for Massa in next weekend's European Grand Prix at Valencia after Michael Schumacher was forced to cancel his comeback due to a lingering neck injury.
