Radical is aiming to beat its own lap record at the Nurburgring for a production car.

In 2005, Radical set the record time of 6mins 56secs in a SR8 Supersport and it is aiming to beat this record with a fully standard SR8LM fitted with Dunlop Direzza road-legal tyres.

The Radical SR8LM will be driven the 500 miles from its Peterborough factory to the German circuit and Dutch sportscar racer Michael Vergers will take the car on its attempted record breaking run.

Radical’s Mick Hyde said: “It’s several years since we last went for the record, and we’ve carried out a huge amount of development work on the SR8 in the meantime.”

Radic has improved the aerodynamics to create more downforce and less drag. The new-for-2009 chassis has passed the FIA production sportscar crash tests, and the engine is also improved, producing 460bhp. It is mated to Radical’s in-house designed six-speed manual ‘box.

“Radical recognises that the Nürburgring lap record is the ultimate test by which a sportscar is judged,” said Hyde.

“Michael Vergers was the obvious choice for the attempt, having achieved the last record, so we have a very good chance of lowering the record if the weather holds out.

“The Radical SR8LM is the ultimate production sportscar for customers whose primary aim is driving to, on, and from the racetrack.”
