The facelifted 3-series coupe and convertible have been spotted final testing before unveiling at the Frankfurt show.

As with most mid-life tweaks, the changes are minimal and are limited to subtle styling, spec and engine improvements.

Notice the new headlamps, which now feature softer curves and a kink on the underside.

The front bumper has also been altered, apparently in an attempt to give the car a slightly more conventional and streamlined appearance.

At the back are LED lights and a new rear bumper. The tail-lamps have raised sections in the middle but are the same shape as before and are likely to be all red.

Previous prototypes have not shown the revised lamps front and rear, and underneath the tape these are the finished cars.

Inside, the major change is expected to be the introduction of BMW’s revised iDrive controller, which features extra buttons clustered around the rotary knob for greater ease of use.

The engine line-up is expected to be relatively unchanged, with four petrol engines and four diesels, although there may be some alterations to improve economy slightly.

Expect minor tweaks to the Efficient Dynamics tech to boost fuel economy, emissions and power and torque outputs.
