Ford's US sales boost

04 August 2009

The Ford Motor Company of America has recorded a two per cent increase in year-on-year sales in July in the US.

Ford was the only multi-brand group in the US to see an increase. Its sales grew from 161,530 units in July 2008 to 165,279 units last month. Lincoln was the only one of Ford’s five brands in the US to record a drop in sales last month.

The launch of the US scrappage scheme last month has bolstered sales across the market. General Motors and Chrysler both saw their sales improve compared with June, down 19 per cent and nine per cent respectively.

The BMW Group was the worst performing of the multi-brand groups in the US, with year-on-year sales down 27 per cent.

Among the individual brands, Subaru was the best performer, with its sales up 34 per cent on last year. Volvo also had a good month, with its sales up 26 per cent.

Saab sold the smallest number of cars in the US in July, shifting only 574 units, a figure 72 per cent down on July 2008.
