Mazda has launched a 20th anniversary special-edition MX-5 Roadster in Japan.

The Mazda Roadster MX-5 20th Anniversary goes on sale today, equipped with a range of features over a standard MX-5.

The new model is available on either the RS, with a manually operated soft-top and six-speed manual gearbox, or the VS RHT, which features a folding hard-top roof and six-speed automatic gearbox.

Extra kit includes Recaro bucket sport seats in black and red Alcantara leather, ‘20th Anniversary’ badges on each side, clear front fog lights and 17-inch aluminium wheels with 205/45R17 tyres.

Heated seats and a soft-touch interior also feature, as does a glass rear window on the soft-top model.

Prices for the soft-top start at 2.86 million Japanese yen (£18,200), and the folding hard-top starts at 3.11m yen (£19,800).

Mazda plans to launch a similar model for Europe at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, although the firm told Autocar there were no plans to bring it to the UK. Instead, the UK will get a different special-edition MX-5 early next year.
