Slow down, sink in the road

31 July 2009

The Highways Agency has highlighted the dangers of unsecured loads - after revealing that debris it had to move last year included full roof boxes, bicycles, surfboards and even a kitchen sink.

In total, 7370 items were reported to patrols for removal.

Derek Turner, Highways Agency operations boss, said: 'The risk of lost luggage can easily be avoided with a few simple checks. What seems secure when you leave home can easily work loose on motorways at high speeds.

'Our advice to drivers is to stop in a safe place and check your luggage before you join the motorway in case items have worked loose.'

The Highways Agency also warned that, as well as potentially causing serious accidents, debris in the roads creates big delays on busy motorways, since it is required to slow the traffic to enable it to move items safely.
