The new Mercedes-Benz SLK has been snapped testing in the Alps and at Germany’s tortuous Nurburgring.

While its main roadster rival, the BMW Z4, has grown bigger, the new SLK has similar dimensions and proportions to the current car.

Again seating is strictly for two, Mercedes avoiding the temptation to put two small seats in the rear.

The styling will be an evolution of today's car and the folding hard-top, which Mercedes pioneered for this segment, remains simple and largely unchanged.

LED driving lamps are set into the lower half of the front bumper and are just visible behind the disguise.

Expect the new SLK to have a range of four and six-cylinder petrol engines, with a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 rumoured for an AMG model.

It is likely the SLK will get a diesel for the first time – probably the 2.2-litre four from the E-class.

The new SLK will make its first public appearance next year, with sales starting in 2011.
