Alonso takes Hungarian GP pole

Renault's Fernando Alonso has taken pole for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
However, the session was earlier marred by a nasty accident that befell Ferrari's Felipe Massa. The Brazilian appeared to be struck on the helmet by debris before crashing heavily into the barriers. He has been airlifted to hospital for checks, but is reported to be in a stable condition and conscious and talking.

The session ended in confusion when the timing monitors all failed. However, times have now been confirmed and Alonso will start on pole, ahead of the title-challenging Red Bull duo of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) will start an encouraging fourth, but title leader Jenson Button was a disappointing eighth.
