The diesel unit produces 134bhp and 265lb ft of torque. It takes 10.2sec to get from 0-62mph, while its top speed is 130mph. Combined fuel consumption is claimed to be up to 51.3 mpg, and CO2 emissions are expected to be between 137g/km and 145g/km.

Despite its smaller displacement, the 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine is more powerful, producing 181bhp and 200lb ft of torque. The CGI takes 8.5sec to go from 0-62mph, and its top speed is 144mph. Combined fuel economy is 39mpg and CO2 emissions are 169g/km.

Both models will be added to the new E-class range in September. The E200 CDI will cost from £26,325, while the CGI will cost from £28,325.
