16 July 2009

Indian car manufacturer Reva has announced plans to build the world’s largest low-cost, electric car factory in Bangalore.

Reva, whose car is rebadged as the G-Wiz in the UK, will open a £3.7 million plant early next year. It will have the capacity to produce 30,000 vehicles a year and employ 350 people.

The Reva is powered by eight six-volt batteries, has a range of 80 miles and sells in India for around £4300 and in the UK for about £7500. It sold a total of 500 cars last year, and has sold 3000 since production began in 2001.

“For the first time, we are seeing heightened environmental awareness,” said Chetan Maini, Reva’s deputy chairman and chief executive officer. “We are promoting a technology that holds the key to the global energy crisis.”
