Jaguar Land Rover has hit back at claims it is planning an extended shutdown of its UK plants, saying production is due to be increased over the coming months.

The car maker recently re-introduced night shifts at its Solihull plant to meet demand for the new Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery.

Following the launch of the new XJ, JLR is now preparing to start production at the end of September. This will include bringing 300 workers from the Solihull plant to Castle Bromwich to cope with the extra production.

Reports at the weekend suggested the firm was drawing up plans for an extended shutdown of its UK plants and a new series of staff layoffs.

But a spokesman told Autocar that the three-week summer shutdown was being cut to two weeks this year to cope with expected demand.

“Far from looking to crank production down we are looking to go the other way,” he said.
