Asda sparks fuel price war

Asda has sparked a fuel price war after it cut the cost of a litre of both unleaded petrol and diesel to under £1.
The nationwide Asda cut prompted Sainsbury’s and Morrisons to partially follow its lead. Asda said there was no longer justification for charging more than £1 for a litre because of the low cost of crude oil.

David Miles, Asda commercial director, said, “We are delighted to be able to reduce both petrol and diesel to 99.9p for all our customers in line with falling costs. They know they’ll get a fair price.
Morrisons has pledged to cut the price of fuel by 3p per litre “in some places” while Sainsbury’s has cut its prices to below £1 per litre at around a quarter of its filling stations.
An AA spokesman said, “A 2p drop in petrol saves the average UK family £4.34 a month. That can then be spent in the high street revitalising businesses.”
Yesterday, hundreds of bikers protested at the high price of fuel by riding at a snail’s pace on the M62 and M60 near Manchester, causing long delays.
