The design inspiration for the new flagship is the last of the cars designed by Walter Owen Bentley, the 8-litre of 1930, a formal, elegant big saloon.

WO was unsentimental about names and used simple engine capacities for his cars — 3-litre, 8-litre, and so on. Today, this is probably a dead end for Bentley because these capacities don’t tie up with current engine sizes.

Bentley Eight is also out as a name — that was an unloved saloon rushed out in response to the 1980s slump.

The ‘French’ theme — Corniche and Azure — could be developed, as could race-derived names characterised by Mulsanne and Brooklands.

But, equally, Bentley could be forced to find a fresh name for the new car.
