BMW has launched the most fuel efficient and cleanest BMW 3 Series the marque has ever produced.

The new BMW 316d ES Saloon is powered by a 1995cc four-cylinder diesel engine that averages 62.8mpg and emits 118g/km of CO2. That puts it in VED road tax band C, which costs £35 a year, and the 13 per cent benefit in kind band.

The engine is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox and has 114bhp and 192lb ft of torque from 1750rpm, delivering a 0-62mph time of 10.9sec.

The BMW 316d ES Saloon goes on sale from September, priced from £23,330.
