Fiat will launch its revolutionary MultiAir engine on the Alfa Romeo Mito from September.

A range of 1.4-litre turbo petrol engines, which have been designed to increase power and torque by 10 per cent, while also decreasing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by the same amount, will be introduced.

The engines use an electro-hydraulic valve control system that reduces consumption levels thanks to direct air control via the engine suction valves, without the use of the throttle. Emissions are cut by more efficient combustion control.

Alfa says the technology is versatile and can be easily applied to all petrol engines. It also says that there is development potential on diesel engines, too.

The 1.4-litre engine will initially be available with three different power levels – 105bhp, 135bhp and 170bhp – and can be mated to both five- and six- speed gearboxes.

The 170bhp version will only be available on a special edition Mito, the Quadrifoglio Verde.

A Start&Stop system will also be included on the MultiAir engines, the first time this has featured on a Mito.

A two-cylinder turbo-charged MultiAir engine is also under development. It is 20 per cent lighter and 25 per cent smaller than a four-cylinder engine with the same power output.
