Vauxhall is confident that the new Astra will be able to match the ride comfort of rivals with fully independent suspension, thanks to a new take on the traditional torsion beam rear end.

The beam uses a Watt’s linkage, which helps to increase the overall stiffness of the suspension and improves the handling.

That means the big mounting bushes that connect the beam to the car are softer and more compliant than usual. This has the added effect of cutting noise and increase comfort.

The sixth-generation Astra is all-new and shares nothing with the current models.

The new Ellesmere Port-built five-door Astra goes on sale this December, with the estate due next year and three-door and VXR in 2011.
