The Volkswagen Golf has re-claimed its crown as Europe’s best-selling car, according to an industry report.

The Ford Fiesta is close behind the Golf, up 59.2 per cent on last April, with 43,253 sales. The Volkswagen is up 10.9 per cent on April 2008, with 49,488 units sold.

Automotive data specialist Jato Consult, which released the report, said the domination of small cars and superminis in the top ten showed European scrappage schemes are working.

Many small cars increased April sales - the Volkswagen Polo and Fiat Panda are up 17.3 per cent and 56.8 per cent respectively – while overall the European new car market dropped by 12.5 per cent.

Jato's David Di Girolamo said: “National government scrappage schemes are really starting to have an impact, both in the sales volumes in different markets and in the type of cars being sold."
