Seat has unveiled its Ibiza Bocanegra, a more extreme-looking version of the Ibiza Cupra, at the Barcelona motor show.

Inspired by the Seat Bocanegra concept car from the 2008 Geneva show, and put into production following the positive reaction to it, the new model gets styling tweaks including black headlight surrounds, a black central grille and black mesh surrounds.

There are also body-coloured bumpers, black door mirror housings, a dark tinted glass sunroof, and Bocanegra badging on the rear hatch.

The interior gets a three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium-finished pedals, sports seats and decals. The car features a seven-speed paddle-shift DSG transmission, and an electronic system that attempts to match the effect of a limited-slip differential.

Given the propensity for dark colours, it’s perhaps no surprise to learn that Bocanegra translates as ‘dark mouth’.

Seat previously sold the 1200 Sport Bocanegra model in the 1970s, and is eager to draw on this heritage.

Buyers will get the choice of two engines, both 1.4-litre twin-charged TSI units as found in the upcoming Ibiza FR and Ibiza Cupra, with either 148bhp or 177bhp.

No prices have been released for the Bocanegra, but expect it to retail at between £16,000 and £17,000 when it goes on sale in late summer.
