Mitsubishi wants to build up to 30,000 electric iMIEVs by 2013 but has said the car won’t make any money for the firm until then.

The all-electric city car, which is currently undergoing fleet trials in the UK and mainland Europe, will enter full production next year. Production is set at 15,000 iMIEVs for 2011 — 5000 more than originally planned.

Mitsubishi president Osamu Masuko said the firm expected demand for the iMIEV to be greater than first thought, partly helped by an agreement to supply the car to PSA Peugeot Citroën.

Meanwhile, the Think electric car company has delayed its UK relaunch by a year to late 2010. It has blamed the government’s failure to offer buying incentives. “The UK government is penalising the first movers by delaying incentives until 2011,” it said.
