Police in alternative fuel pledge

Half of London’s police cars could be either electric or air-powered within four years, Scotland Yard has announced.
As part of the plans, the Met would look to replace old cars with alternative fuel models in a bid to reduce CO2 emissions in the capital.
London police are already testing electric Smart cars and there are proposals to trial vehicles run on compressed air.
There are already an estimated 140 Toyota Prius hybrid cars on the Met fleet and this is likely to expand over the next few years.
Nigel Jakubowski, head of transport services for the Met, said: "London is perfect for alternative fuels such as electric or hybrid vehicles. For central London the top speed of 55mph isn't a problem.
“The uniformed officers who have driven them say they are very quick. We have installed charging points at the stations the cars are based in, and they work very well."
