Volkswagen launched a heavily facelifted version of the Passat Lingyu at the Shanghai show, itself a Chinese market version of the last generation Passat that was replaced in Europe in 2004.

The Passat New Lingyu, as VW calls it, is the Chinese market range topper and sits on an long-wheelbase variant of the old Passat B5 platform. The bodywork is different to the old European Passat, with different rear door apertures.

Developed in China, the Passat New Lingyu is available with a reworked 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with 145bhp, a 13bhp increase over the old car. Fuel consumption is claimed as 45mpg. A V6 is also available.

External changes include new front and rear lights, a new grille and new bumpers.
