GM and Saab to share technology
26 March 2009
General Motors has announced it will continue to share technology with Saab after it sells of its Swedish arm, in order to make the firm more appealing to prospective buyers.
The tie-up will last for at least five years. GM will share its platform technology, while Saab will contribute its safety, engine and chassis development.
The new Saab 9-5 will share a platform with GM’s Insignia, so platform sharing was always likely. However, Saab will not share its turbo or cabriolet technology.
Lars Hagerborg, Saab’s finance director, said, "GM will be a vital partner for Saab for at least five to 10 years, during which we, with a new owner, will have access to a large amount of technology that we need."
Saab has said that it has six potential buyers, but it is not expected to finalise any deals before the end of its three-month reconstruction period.
