Mitsubishi cuts back in Europe
20 March 2009
Mitsubishi is moving more of its European operations back to Japan as part of a series of cost-cutting measures.
All sales, marketing, product management and business planning functions that had been performed by Mitsubishi Motors Europe from its base near Amsterdam are being moved to Japan.
As a result, the number of support staff in Amsterdam will be cut, and after-sales management staff will move to a new base in Born, near Maastricht. Mitsubishi says 45% of its white-collar staff in Amsterdam will be made redundant.
As a result of the changes, Mitisubishi's distributors will liase directly with the Japanese head office.
A Mitsubishi UK source said the changes would have no direct effect on operations in the UK, adding that the shortened lines of communication could actually help.
The company announced earlier this year that it was closing its European and North American design offices.
A company statement said the move would "better develop MMC’s presence in its most important global business region through better efficiencies and a direct connection with the European markets and customers."
Mitsubishi Motors Europe was opened in 1977 in Rotterdam.
