UK car production fell 59% year-on-year in February, according to official figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

The dramatic drop in production is not a surprise, as production has been cut back or halted at most manufacturers' plants as sales have slumped in recent months and stockpiles of unsold cars have built up.

Following the news, the SMMT's chief executive Paul Everitt called on the government to help the car industry.

“We still require government support for short-time working, easier access to finance and credit and the implementation of a vehicle scrappage scheme," he said.
