Audi unveils new Le Mans racer

11 March 2009

Audi has unveiled its new Le Mans LMP1 endurance racer, the diesel-powered Audi R15 TDI.

The Audi R15 TDI is powered by a new 600bhp V10 turbodiesel that’s lighter and more frugal than the twelve-cylinder turbodiesel in its predecessor, the R10, which won Le Mans three times.

The R15 also uses a lithium-ion battery to power its electrical system. The new battery is both lighter and more powerful than a conventional lead-acid battery and allows the R15’s low-beam headlights to be made entirely from LEDs.

The new R15 – and a revised Peugeot 908 HDi – will provide stiff competition for Aston Martin’s works LMP1 Le Mans entry.

The R15 makes its debut at the Sebring 12 hours on 21 March, and will be driven by Allan McNish.
