Troubled Swedish car maker Saab has had to stop production at its Trollhattan plant for a day, after it emerged it had failed to pay its outstanding customs duties.

Swedish customs retained vital parts needed for assembly after customs authorities informed the company it owed a “considerable” sum of money.

Customs had removed the company’s 30-day credit facility after it filed for bankruptcy protection last week.

A large amount of parts from General Motors’ production sites outside of the European Union were held in two warehouses while Saab settled the debt.

The restrictions only affected Wednesday’s production.
