Swiss tuning firm Rinspeed has created a modified Fiat 500 Abarth with two power modes to save fuel: a 59bhp setting for urban driving and a 158bhp mode for driving on open roads.

The Rinspeed E2, which will be launched at Geneva next week, has a dashboard-mounted button that allows the driver to choose between commuting and highway modes.

In commuting mode the car is claimed to return 70.6mpg, and in highway mode that decreases to 40.3mpg.

Rinspeed boss Frank Rinderknecht reckons that products like this are future for the tuning industry. “Just like the auto industry has to adjust to the demands of a new era,” he said, “tuners have to look for new ways to do business as well."
