Honda will appoint a new CEO, Takanobu Ito, later in the year, the company has announced. Ito will replace Takeo Fukui as the head of Japan’s second-largest car manufacturer.

New boss Takanobu Ito will replace Fukui after his six-year reign comes to an end in June. Ito, the current head of global automotive operations at Honda, will also reprise his former role as director of Honda research and development when he becomes president and CEO.

He joined the company in 1978, and later went on to help develop the all-aluminium frame used to underpin the Honda NSX supercar. Ito also lead development of the first SUV to be sold under the Acura brand during his time as executive vice president of research and development for Honda USA.

Outgoing president Fukui will remain on the Honda board of directors in an advisory position.
