French car makers must use French parts to get government funding

French car makers will have to buy parts from French suppliers if they are to get any funding from the government, French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said.

Sarkozy said he wants manufacturers to commit to buying specific numbers of parts from local suppliers if they are to receive any of the proposed €6bn (£5.4bn) in government aid.

Sarkozy has already demanded that manufacturers pledge to keep production in France.

Renault boss Carlos Ghosn has already said the company has no plans to close any of its French factories, despite the lure of cheaper eastern-European production.
