Volkswagen has announced its first production hybrid, the Volkswagen Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid.

Volkswagen says the VW Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid will offer “maximum power with minimum consumption”.

It will be powered by a 328bhp supercharged 3.0-litre TSI V6 petrol engine, as well as a 38kw (51bhp) electric motor powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery. Up to 30mph the car can run on electric power alone.

The Touareg has a claimed 0-62mph of 6.8sec, achieved by using the car’s Sport function to increase power to 368bhp and torque to 385lb ft.

The Touareg V6 TSI Hybrid uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the electric motor also acts as the starter motor for the petrol engine. Weight saving measures to compensate for the 175kg added by the hybrid components include a lighter Torsen differential in the four-wheel drive system.

A stop-start system will also help fuel consumption, which is claimed to be 31.4mpg on the combined cycle – that’s a 40 per cent reduction compared with a 3.6 V6 petrol Touareg.

CO2 emissions are expected to be less than 210g/km when the car goes on sale next year.
