Struggling manufacturer General Motors has received 10,000 advance orders for its forthcoming Chevrolet Camaro.

Chevrolet had anticipated the majority of orders placed to be for the V8 and SS models, but has been surprised by the number of V6s chosen by customers.

"We are getting a considerable amount of V6 orders," said Mark LaNeve, GM’s head of marketing and sales.

The entry-level V6 Chevrolet Camaro will use a 3.6-litre unit producing 296bhp and 273lb ft of torque, while the range-topping SS will produce 416bhp from its 6.2-litre V8.

Around 1000 right-hand-drive Chevrolet Camaros will be made of each of the coupe and cabriolet body styles, with the UK likely to receive 300 of each. Cars should start reaching UK customers by early 2010 and could cost as little as £30,000.
