This is the first official teaser shot of the Subaru Legacy concept car, which is due to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January.

Subaru is promising more aggressive styling, a distinctive front grille and flared wheel arches along with a more comfortable, higher-quality cabin.

The concept will be powered by the familiar 3.6-litre boxer engine from the Subaru Tribeca and has four-wheel drive. When the new Legacy makes production, we should expect the more efficient diesel boxer engine to be carried over. It will undoubtedly be the biggest seller in Europe and the UK.

Subaru is launching the car in Detroit because North America is a key market for the Legacy. The region has accounted for 43 per cent of the current model’s global sales.

Expect the production version to arrive in the showroom in late 2009.
