Ford is expected to drop the first hints towards its new global design language at the Detroit motor show in January.

The struggling Detroit giant plans to bring a global design ethos to the brand, which will replace the ‘kinetic’ styling we currently have in Europe.

Ford’s Detroit concept car – expected to be a replacement for the US-only Taurus – is being kept closely under wraps. But the Blue Oval’s global design chief J Mays admitted: "while it’s not the next-generation design language, it will be a big step in the direction of the global design DNA”.

For two years, Ford’s previously separate design teams in Europe and North America have been collaborating to come up with one global design language for the brand.

The new design ethos is expected to apply to all sub-D segment models in the future. But we won’t see the first car adopt the design until 2010.

At the recent LA motor show, Mays told reporters the new design language would be “simpler and more elegant” than kinetic.
