Mazda’s relationship with Ford won’t change, even if the struggling US automotive giant sells the bulk of its shares, the Japanese car maker’s boss has said.

“Our ties are so close,” said Mazda CEO Hisakazu Imaki. “You can’t tell how much of the company is Mazda and how much of it is Ford.”

Ford has held shares in Mazda since the 1970s and now owns a controlling stake in the Japanese giant.

Industry analysts have said that the success of Ford of Europe’s small car operation means that Mazda no longer fits in with the Blue Oval’s global strategy.
