Stowaways found in Bentley

30 October 2008

Four illegal immigrants attempting to sneak into Britain while sitting in a Bentley have been intercepted by the UK Border Agency.

The four men, believed to be from Iraq, were in a Continental GT that was being transported by lorry from the Nurburgring to the Bentley factory in Crewe. UKBA officers using specialist carbon dioxide detecting equipment sounded the alarm when the truck was searched in Calais.

PSA Peugeot-Citroen suffered from similar problems several years ago, with illegal immigrants breaking into cars being transported to the UK by train – but this is believed to be the first time stowaways have tried to smuggle themselves in a Bentley.

The UKBA searched over a million lorries last year at Continental channel ports, detecting 18,000 stowaways.
