The new Audi S4 moves the RS4’s less powerful sibling upmarket with a 328bhp supercharged V6 and a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds. Unveiled at the Paris show, the S4 shows how Audi is downsizing the engines of its performance cars – the previous S4 used a 4.2-litre V8 with slightly more power and near identical performance.

The new engine, a 2995cc unit, uses direct injection and comes with a six-speed manual as standard. Audi’s dual clutch S tronic transmission, a version of the VW Group’s DSG unit adapted for longitudinal engine installations is optional. Quattro four-wheel drive is standard.

All this performance means that the new RS4, likely to appear next year, will be faster still although not necessarily more powerful than the now defunct previous generation. Before that, though, the S4 goes on sale – we’ll get the first cars in March.
