General Motors will stop sending waste to landfill sites at over half of its factories, the car maker has announced.
The company currently has 43 factories that recycle or reuse waste material, but by 2010 the world’s largest manufacturer wants to have more than 80 entirely green production sites worldwide.
General Motors is looking to take over from Toyota as the world’s number one eco brand with a range of hybrid, electric and fuel-cell cars and this commitment to recycling will go some way to improve their green credentials.
Under the scheme more than three million tonnes of waste will avoid being sent to landfill, with 96 per cent of factory waste being recycled or reused. A further three per cent will be burned at waste-to-energy facilities.
The increase is set to net General Motors $16 million a year in North America alone, from the sale of scrap carboard, wood and other waste. GM estimates it earns around $1bn from recycling each year.
