Honda has reported a near 20 per cent increase in sales in China.

Japan's second largest carmaker said that its sales rise was mainly due to the high demand for the new Honda Accord saloon, which boosted year-to-date sales by 22,6 per cent to 309,561 units.

The announcement surprised some analyst, as China's auto sales have recently been in decline. Currently overall new car sales are down 5.4 per cent for August says industry group China Passenger Car Association.

The organisation said 2008 sales would still increase by between six and eight per cent for 2008, but compared with the double-figure growth that the sector has experienced in the past few years, it's a significant decline.
