Toyota has laid off 800 workers in one of its Japanese plants.
The cuts are a result of falling sales in North America, and all of those affected are agency staff rather than permanent employees. An official described the cuts as “temporary”, stating that the workers will be re-employed when demand requires.
The job losses happened over the last two months at Toyota Motor Kyushu, a wholly owned subsidiary that makes Lexus models.
Toyota has yet to release an official statement on the job cuts. However, a UK spokesperson said, “Despite the falling sales in North America, global production figures for 2008 are still predicted to be as high as 9.5 million, up one per cent on last year, due to the increased demand in growing markets such as Russia and China.”
