These are the first ever images of the next generation ‘998’ version of the seminal Porsche 911.

The prototype shows off significantly wider front and rear tracks, aimed at improving the car’s high-speed agility. Although this test mule is hiding behind the same looks as the recently facelifted 911 Carrera 4/4S, it’s clear that Porsche intends to stick closely to the current car’s proportions.

Porsche is simulating a new aerodynamic package with a prominent lip added to the rear spoiler, presumably for added downforce and extra cooling of the engine bay. There also appears to be a slight alteration to the front end suspension geometry, with an increase in camber providing a greater tow-out effect.

We know that other major aerodynamic innovations being considered for the ‘998’ include variable lift mechanisms for the front and rear, so the modification to this prototype’s rear spoiler could prove to have a deeper significance.

Sources within Porsche suggest the 998 will adopt existing driveline hardware from the facelifted 997, with the direct injection 341bhp 3.6 and 380bhp 3.8-litre six-cylinder engines set to be brought over with little or no change. Buyers will also get the choice of either a standard six-speed or optional seven-speed double clutch gearbox.

In keeping with the developments brought to the current model, the 998 will be both cleaner and faster than the car it replaces. Porsche regards its new direct injection petrol engine as giving it the capability to take environmental leadership among sportscar makers, so expect the 998 to turn in both better fuel economy and improved performance figures.
