Company bosses are known to be considering another round of job cuts and plant closures in America – and the company might even get rid of some of its subsidiary brands, with Hummer (whose sales have fallen 60 per cent in a year) first in the firing-line.

Bringing the petrol-electric Volt’s debut forward to September next year would also coincide with the General’s 100th anniversary. GM has confirmed that the Volt will be coming to Europe – but its launch on this side of the Atlantic will be at least 18 months behind going on sale in America.
