Gordon Murray, legendary designer of the McLaren F1 supercar, has been presented with an award for his outstanding achievement in engineering by Durban University of Technology in South Africa.
Professor Murray, who studied at Durban, was presented with the university's prized Silver Tusk trophy. After graduating from the Technikon Natal, as Durban University was then known, Murray jumped straight into the world of Formula One and went on to design iconic sports cars like the Mclaren F1 and Mercedes SLR.
Last year he set-up his own company, Gordon Murray Design Limited, and is in the process of creating a lightweight city car, codenamed Type 25, that promises to revolutionise the future of transport and its environmental impact.
